Fuel for Race Day
Powering up with a fuel-loaded breakfast is one of the best things you can do race day. A few tips from our race directors, these ladies/gents have run more than 100 marathons between them:
- Whatever you eat make sure it’s something you would normally eat prior to a run. Training is a good place to test various combos – not race day.
- Carbs are a good call i.e. whole-grain bagel with peanut butter or oatmeal with water and honey
- A little protein is fine too e.g. an egg or yogurt. Try to stay away from foods loaded with fat.
- Drink water!
New/Noteworthy: Food and Drinks in Paradise
SoCal has more than ocean views. With one of the best food scenes in the country, finding something tasty or refreshing isn’t hard to come by. Moreover, we can’t think of a better way to reward yourself for a job well-done. Check out our top new and noteworthy picks. For our local runners – hit us up on Twitter and Facebook to give your two-cents!
Meet Nikita. Located right next door to the famed Nobu on a covetable stretch of PCH, this Italian/Mediterranean restaurant has a spacious rooftop patio perfect for paradise by osmosis. Start with the burrata, don’t miss their selection of handmade pastas and order something to sip on. We recommend the Left Break at Zeros, more than a proper nod to Malibu’s surf culture you can’t go wrong with this delectable concoction of gin, champagne, pear and rosemary purée and cinnamon dust.

Known for her lavish farm-to-table dinners Helene Henderson has branched out to open a café on the Malibu pier. Everything you need to know about this pop-up is in its tagline: Fresh.Organic.Local. Labor Day was the inaugural weekend and, fingers-crossed, it should be open for dinner by October with a full liquor license. Mini Swedish pancakes, cauliflower lavash “pizza” and salted caramel ice cream sandwiches – enough said.
Address: End of the Malibu pier, 23000 PCH Malibu, CA 90265
This neighborhood seafood joint is large on flavors and style with its beachy-bistro vibe and seasonal seafood classics, but thankfully, limited on pretense. Tucked away in laid back Venice, prepare your palette for dishes like olive oil poached salmon and fish skin chips with harissa. When it comes to cocktails keep an open mind, Salt Air does some amazing things with wine and beer-based drinks – passionfruit and sour beer Shandy or sherry and hibiscus Cobbler? Yes and yes.
