Half Marathon Course Resolution
Dear Malibu Half-Marathoners,
Thank you again for making the 2013 race a huge success. Your support means everything to us, which is why we want to apologize for not thoroughly communicating in advance – that we had to adjust the course.
Due to policy chances with some of our permitting agencies, we could not use Thornhill Broome Beach Campground to start the half marathon. The accurately measured course put the 13.1 start mark on Pacific Coast Highway, in a narrow corner, and a hike away from the staging area. Safety is always our number one concern. Because we were not comfortable with the idea of putting thousands of our runners at risk, we decided to move the start closer to our staging area in Point Mugu State Park. This adjustment resulted in our half marathon being 13.4 miles.
The good thing is that you have undeniably run 13.1 miles; however, we understand your concern with the time. The timing company we work with is able to revise each runner’s time accordingly, and we will post updated times by November 30th, 2013. Already, without the time adjustment, we know, many personal and course records were set. The time adjustment will give everyone the opportunity to have a more accurate time based on a 13.1 miles course.
For next year, we are looking into a variety of solutions; including moving the start line, having more police presence, and petitioning to move back to our original start location. We will keep you posted.
We love running as much as you do and we greatly appreciate your patience and understanding. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any additional questions.
