Realistic & Aggressive Training by Coach Blue
Coach Blue

When it comes to marathon goals and the training we do to achieve those goals, we all too often fall short of what we had expected or planned for. "Hitting a wall" or "having a bad day" seem to take all the blame when things don't go our way on race day but these may just be the result of a bigger, more important problem with our race prep and execution.

The bigger problem is not enough training at goal race pace. This is the tip of the month! More aggressive training... We do all this long easy running on the weekends and somehow expect to miraculously be able to run 30 seconds faster on race day. This usually works for the first 16-20 miles and then... Well, and then there comes that "wall"! So what do we do? Some of the best advice I ever got was from US 50k record holder and two time Malibu Marathon 13.1 winner/course record holder, Josh Cox. He told me to spend more time training at the pace you expect to race at. The body will adapt and become more comfortable at faster paces by simply spending more time there. Let me tell you, it works! Try doing race pace for part of your weekend long runs. For example: on a 16 miler, run 4 easy, 8 at race pace, 4 easy. If it’s too much, start with less race pace miles and work more in over time.

The second tip is to take all of the training you have done leading up to the event and let the numbers speak to you. If you can’t hold a 7 minute mile for 10 miles in training, you may not want to try and hold 7 minute pace for 26.2 miles. Be honest with the results you have yielded and be honest with your expectations for yourself. Be aggressive but also make sure you are realistic!

Now go train and enjoy every beautiful, painful mile of it! We'll see you in November!
